		<description>I think I can provide technical and economic arguments for promoting electrification of commuter rail - simply by using &#039;wireless&#039; technologies (no overhead wires) that reduces the cost by 30% and does not require disruption to ongoing rail operations.  It also makes maximum use of abundant off-peak electricity here in Ontario - rather than buying diesel fuel from outside the province.  I have pasted an abstract of a presentation that I give on this subject, and would be happy to do so to interested members of CTC.

Several major themes that are being pursued as part of implementing Smart Grid Solutions in Ontario are: 1) shifting of system peaks 2) increasing the efficiency and capacity of the existing grid 3) making better use of surplus off-peak generation capacity 4) using energy storage technologies to enable dispatch-able electricity from intermittent renewable sources and 5) the electrification of transportation as part of a broader de-carbonization strategy.

One emerging transportation technology that addresses all 5 of these themes is the development of &#039;wireless&#039; light rail urban transportation systems that makes use of off-peak inexpensive (night time) electricity to generate hydrogen.  This stored hydrogen can then be used during daytime commuter peaks to fuel modern hybrid electric-traction trolley systems that include fuel cells, ultra-caps and advanced batteries that harvest braking energy. There are many value propositions from this application including no expensive overhead wires, no adding to system peaks, improved urban air quality and use of off-peak base load capacity.

A major North American supplier of light rail systems (the ‘B’ company) is well along in developing this technology, but will need a suitable location to demonstrate both the technical feasibility and the economic advantages.  This presentation will provide an overview of this innovative electro-technology that combines two major infrastructure sectors: power and transportation.</description>
