Clean Train Coalition has joined efforts with Toronto Airport Council of Unions, TTC Riders, Greater Toronto Workers Assembly and Social Planning Toronto to advocate for OUR UNION-PEARSON.
OUR UNION-PEARSON calls on all levels of government to make the rail corridor between Union Station and Pearson Airport a public transit line that provides frequent, electrified, multi-stop service across the City’s north-west and has TTC level fares within Toronto’s boundaries.
Representatives of OUR UP met with Metrolinx last week to discuss their concerns, including the lack of a public consultation process for UP Express Fare Prices. Fares are to be based on business travelers and tourist, with price levels that could discourage use of this service as Public Transit. Metrolinx is to announce fares this week. The need for more station locations and electrification was also discussed.
OUR UP also monitored the December 5th Toronto Executive Committee at which Mayor Tory introduced SmartTrack as a City of Toronto initiative. SmartTrack is to be implemented within the next 7 years and reflects plans by Metrolinx and the Province for electrified express rail service across the region.
The concept plan, produced by Strategic Regional Research Associates, has been shared by the electric SmartTrack and electrified Regional Express Rail planners. It indicates that more stops are needed for better accessibility to riders. Early plans for the UP Express also showed several ‘future stops’ to be added. OUR UP members support the Mount Dennis Community Association’s call for matching the two routes and connecting with an extended Eglinton Crosstown LRT.
An opportunity exists for capital contributions from the Federal Government toward an integrated transit infrastructure project through the new Building Canada Fund.
The issues will be brought forward for decisions to the Metrolinx Board on December 11th and City Council, January 22nd.
SmartTrack, Smart Fares, Smart Investment. OUR UNION-PEARSON.
